Sandy Schilling Payne

Sandy Schilling Payne was born in Washington state to Black Sea German parents from South Dakota. She moved several times before the age of five when her family finally settled in New Mexico. There in the southwestern United States she grew up and attended New Mexico State University where she earned a BA majoring in both Journalism & Mass Communications and English. Upon graduation in 1989, she went into the brand new field of information technology and has worked as a systems and network administrator, subject matter expert and later moved into IT management. She has worked in the information systems departments of universities, startup companies, and Fortune 500 companies in industries including primary and higher education, newspaper publishing, wealth management, telecommunications, and healthcare. Her research interests include genealogical geography, the settlement locations of Germans in Russia and their migrations to the present day, and the psychology of "place attachment.
